“And I like large parties. They’re so intimate. At small parties there isn’t any privacy.”

Gatsby Murder Mystery

There’s a sense of magic and wonder that comes with thinking about the Roaring 20s—and no book more iconically depicts the Jazz Age than the American classic The Great Gatsby. To commemorate 100 years of Gatsby, Southern Ghost Girls is hosting a Gatsby-themed murder mystery party on Saturday, August 16. It is to be held at the beautiful Arlington Historic House and Gardens (331 Cotton Ave. S.W., Birmingham), which boasts of manicured gardens and historic museum pieces. “My favorite place to host the Murder Mystery Dinner Events is Arlington Historic House and Gardens as it is the perfect backdrop to our Interactive Murder Mystery Dinners that take place during times of the past,” shares Lesley Ann Hyde, CEO of Southern Ghost Girls Tours.

The murder mystery dinner will include a farm-to-plate dinner by Birmingham Chef Matthew Murphree. Costumes and accessories are encouraged, but not required, to aid in creating a historical feel and to contribute to the theme. “My favorite thing about our Murder Mystery Dinners is that it brings people together in a non-threatening environment where they meet others and share a magical night together doing something fun and different,” Hyde explains. The night offers the freedom of stepping into character, into a life of mystery, intrigue, and adventure. “We encourage people to interact as one of the characters in the storyline, but if they don’t want to, then they don’t have to,” she adds.

This event is perfect for families, friends, date night, or a special celebration. It’s also family-friendly, so don’t hesitate to bring your teens, especially if they enjoy acting or roleplaying. “We find it gives the kids an outlet to pretend to be someone else during the storyline, and who doesn’t like pretending?” Hyde points out. “It encourages people, both kids and adults, to be more social, and I feel that’s very important during these days of constant cell phone usage.”
