Irondale is about to get even better because Costco Wholesale Corporation is coming! Costco is planning to open its 6th store within Alabama—and its second in the Birmingham metro area—with a 152,000 square-foot warehouse and a self-service gas station. The investment is estimated to be approximately $105 million, which will be the largest since the Irondale Luxury Automall opened in 2018. Soon Birmingham shoppers will have two Costco stores to choose from, with another Costco located down the road in Hoover. The other locations across the state include Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, and Madison.

“This is a defining moment for our city,” shares Mayor James D. Stewart, Jr. “Costco’s arrival shows that Irondale is open for business, ready for growth, and serious about attracting high-quality development. This project will not only create hundreds of jobs and generate millions in new revenue, but it also signals to other top-tier businesses that Irondale is a place where they can thrive. We are building a stronger, more vibrant future for our residents, and this is just the beginning of what’s ahead for our city.”

Costo bought 18 acres for the store on Grants Mill Trail near Interstate 459 to build on and to provide cushion to the neighboring areas. The city anticipates $6–8 million in annual sales tax revenue, along with 200–300 new jobs. Needless to say, the City of Irondale is excited for the anticipated economic growth that a “big box store” will bring to their town—the smallest of the cities in Alabama with a Costco.
