Irondale’s former public library (105 20th Street S.) just became home to the new A.G. Gaston Boys and Girls Club! What was once a space filled with books about transformed lives is now the very place where lives are being changed and youth are impacted. The City of Irondale describes it in a Facebook post as “[a] new chapter for Irondale’s youth… creating new opportunities for learning, growth, and connection for our young people.”
The club is a chapter of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, a nationwide organization founded in 1966 to help serve local youth and offer them a safe, nurturing environment to develop academically, emotionally, and socially. “At A.G. Gaston Boys and Girls Club, we don’t just entertain kids. We don’t just help them with homework,” the club’s website explains. “We believe in them, we respect them, and we challenge them. Ultimately, we help them grow strong, believe in themselves, and go bravely into the future.”
The club’s location will enable them to serve children from the Greater Birmingham metro area, with transportation provided by Irondale schools. “This new Club represents opportunity, growth, and a safe space where young people can learn, lead, and thrive,” the club shares in a post. They repurposed the library’s space, adding a fresh coat of paint and new carpet but leaving the bookshelves so they can be filled in the days to come.
