Even if you’ve never seen a ballet, chances are good that you’ve heard of Swan Lake—whether through pop culture or movie adaptations like Barbie of Swan Lake or Black Swan. And now it’s coming to Birmingham as part of the World Ballet Company’s 2025–2026 National Tour!

Be prepared to get swept into the enchanting story of love, betrayal, and transformation on April 9 at 7 p.m. at none other than the beautiful Alabama Theatre—there’s no venue more perfect than the elegant, intimate theater that’s been around almost as long as the ballet itself. A CLASSIC STORY KIDS CAN FOLLOW

The timeless tale follows Prince Siegfried as he meets Odette, a princess cursed to live as a swan by day under the spell of a dark sorcerer. Though Siegfried swears his love and promises to break the enchantment, he is ultimately deceived by the sorcerer’s daughter, Odile—the alluring and enigmatic Black Swan—leading to devastating heartbreak. Featuring unforgettable moments like the delicate Dance of the Little Swans and the breathtaking 32 fouettés of the Black Swan, all set to Tchaikovsky’s sweeping score, Swan Lake remains one of the most technically demanding and emotionally powerful ballets ever performed. Yet, the story is also easy to follow, allowing even the littlest audience members to understand and enjoy the ballet. (Plus, who doesn’t love a fairytale?!)

A SCREEN-FREE EXPERIENCE THAT FEELS LIKE A MOVIE

“Our Swan Lake combines the elegance of classical ballet with vivid, immersive storytelling,” explains Sasha Gorskaya, co-founder of the World Ballet Company (WBC). “It’s a magical experience for both ballet newcomers and longtime fans.” Live storytelling from the stage is unlike any other experience—it feels even more real than a movie because you can reach out and almost touch them. There will be lots of eye-candy for kids and adults alike: This production features fabulous choreography by Nadezhda Kalinina and over 150 hand-sewn costumes with large tutus, feathers, beaded detail, and more. Not to mention the intricate hand-painted sets created using centuries-old theatrical techniques and stunning projection and multi-media visuals. The company blends together classical artistry and Broadway-style theatrical flair in a way that’s bound to steal hearts.

BALLET FOR ALL

The WBC motto is, “Ballet Everywhere, Ballet For All,” and they mean that—in just its fourth full season, WBC has performed in 200+ cities across 40+ states for over 550,000 people. This Swan Lake performance will be one of over 80 shows that graces stages around the country, with dancers from over ten countries!

“We believe ballet is for everyone, and the response from audiences nationwide has been incredible,” says producer Gulya Hartwick, who co-founded WBC with Sasha Gorskaya. “Swan Lake is arguably the most iconic ballet ever created, and we’re thrilled to bring this majestic production to Birmingham.”

This performance will be a moment your kids will actually remember for years to come. And who knows, it might just spark some creativity and curiosity! Swan Lake is visually stunning, and the story is so compelling that it’s the perfect way to introduce your littles to the arts in a non-intimidating way.
