Catholic education is growing in the Diocese of Birmingham, and your family can be part of it.

This fall, St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School will open its doors in Montevallo, offering a brand-new option for families who want their children to grow in faith, academics, and community. It’s the first new Catholic school to open in the Diocese of Birmingham in 25 years, and it’s a big moment for families across Shelby County and the greater Birmingham area.

Why a New Catholic School and Why Now?

Over the past few years, families at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, and across the region, have been asking for more. More access to faith-based education. More community. More support for forming children not only academically, but spiritually and morally too.

Father Brad Jantz, pastor at St. Thomas, heard those prayers loud and clear.

“We had families coming to us for sacraments like baptism, but their kids had never been in a Catholic environment,” said Fr. Jantz. “We realized we needed to offer something more—a place where children could learn, grow, and encounter Christ every single day.”

And so, the vision for St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School was born.

Small Classes, Big Heart

The school will launch with kindergarten through 2nd grade, with plans to expand. Each classroom will be capped at 18 students, ensuring your child gets the attention, care, and faith-based formation they deserve.

At the helm is Principal Michael Fisher, a graduate of both John Carroll Catholic High School and the University of Montevallo. With years of experience in Catholic education, Fisher is passionate about developing the whole child—mind, heart, and soul.

“We’re not just opening a school, we’re building a community,” Fisher said. “One where every child is known, every parent is supported, and every day begins with purpose.”

Affording a Catholic Education

Worried about the cost of private school? Don’t be.

St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School is committed to making Catholic education affordable and accessible for all families. The school proudly accepts:
