Celebrating the Lives of Lost Loved Ones
Published: November 30, 2023
This holiday season, Community Grief Support (CGS) is celebrating the lives of those we’ve loved and lost in our community.
Sponsored by Protective and AL Power Foundation, CGS believes this fundraiser invites grieving individuals to find hope and healing in an uplifting and positive way. The “Tree of Lights” Memorial, taking place this November and December, will honor our late loved ones with the lighting of a 12-foot holiday tree in Homewood’s Central Park, at the corner of Oxmoor Road and Central Ave., in one of the most visible locations in the city. The tree will be full of twinkling lights – not just bringing cheer to residents and those passersby – but honoring our loved ones who have passed on.
In addition to the memorial tree, this year we will celebrate with an official “Tree of Lights” event on Sunday, December 10, 3:30-5:30 pm at Homewood Central Park. Family- and pet-friendly, our event will be replete with festivities, including Santa & Mrs. Claus, holiday music, refreshments, and a bounce house; all are invited. People are welcome to bring their own ornament or make one to place on the tree. At 5 pm there will be a memorial dedication and tree lighting.
“We believe that the ‘Tree of Lights’ will bring the community of Homewood and Birmingham together to provide a much-needed memorial and balm for our losses,” says Catherine Pittman Smith, Administrative Director of Community Grief Support. “And this year, we are excited to be able to celebrate with an in-person event – honoring those we’ve loved and lost.”
