Memorial Day, previously known as “Decoration Day,” is actually a federal holiday for honoring and mourning members of the military who have died while serving the country. But with its timing at the end of May and many people’s three-day weekends, it has become a “start of summer” holiday for many.
The history of Memorial Day in the United States is complex according to Wikipedia, and it has been observed since 1868. The practice of decorating soldiers’ graves with flowers is an ancient custom. Soldiers’ graves were decorated in the U.S. before and during the American Civil War.
