As a professional counselor, Sabrina Pinckney is passionate about helping children establish boundaries and balance in their lives. In her new children’s book, Ellie Gets Even, Pinckney addresses how to talk to children about the complex issue of dating after a divorce. “In my professional opinion, books focused on the emotional impact of divorce are lacking in the children’s literature market,” Pinckney says. “I want to change that.”
In Ellie Gets Even, Ellie and her mother do everything together, but when her mother starts dating, Ellie feels abandoned and plots revenge. Conversations with children about their feelings post-divorce can be challenging, but Pinckney believes talking honestly about one’s feelings is extremely important in developing trust between a child and parent and gives children a sense of security.
“Most divorced adults will resume a social life and more often than not, a child’s initial reaction will be negative,” Pinckney says. “Taking the time to talk to your child about their feelings is crucial in helping them adjust to a divorce.” Ellie Gets Even is available for purchase online at Amazon.com.
