McWane Science Center Opens its Newest Museum

Does your preschooler like to play fireman? Play house? Want to work in a diner? Play grocery store? How about auto repair or driving a truck?
Kids can do all that and more in the McWane Science Center’s new children’s museum, the Itty Bitty Magic City. With child-size replicas of the above activities and more, children ages kindergarten and under can play out all those imaginary scenes, climb, play with water and much more.
The 10,000-square-foot Itty Bitty Magic City opened in May, the largest capital project for McWane Science Center since its founding 16 years ago.
This addition is made possible through a public/ private partnership between McWane Science Center and the city of Birmingham along with other private donors. The new children’s museum space will encourage young children’s love of learning and combine it with the power of play. It will be a regional resource for parents as well as educators in early childhood education. Admission to the area is free with McWane Science Center admission.
Itty Bitty Magic City features:
Main Street: This area captures the look and feel of a downtown main street area complete with storefronts, sidewalks, and streetlights. Main Street includes a fire station, a farm, a veterinarian clinic, a market, a diner and a garage.
Tot Spot: The toddler area provides a secure space for McWane’s youngest visitors to explore and play.
“We are happy to welcome visitors into Itty Bitty Magic City. We have been anticipating this project for some time now,” says McWane Science Center CEO Amy Templeton.
