As traditional spring gardens enter full bloom throughout the country, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex welcomes a new addition to its own, iconic Rocket Garden.
The United Launch Alliance (ULA) Delta II rocket recently “took root” to preserve the legacy of the space craft that fostered the Global Positioning System and galvanized the exploration of Mars.
Delta II assumed its place among renowned giants in the Rocket Garden, joining an original Delta, Mercury-Redstone, Mercury-Atlas, Gemini-Titan, Juno I and Juno II, Atlas-Agena and Saturn IB.
ULA selected the Visitor Complex as the rocket’s permanent home following it final mission in 2018. The collaborative mission of both entities was to prominently display one of the newest pieces in space exploration in the emblematic Rocket Garden.
“While IceSat-2 marked its final mission in 2018, Delta II’s legacy will live on in the technology and exploration it delivered for nearly 30 years, including GPS and the Spirit and Opportunity Mars rovers,” says Tory Bruno, ULA’s president and CEO. “We are excited to honor the legacy of the Delta II and pay tribute to the people who designed, built and launched it for nearly three decades.”
