Birmingham Water Works' Annual School Program Continues in 2021 with At-Home Activities & Multimedia Contest
Published: March 4, 2021
With the on-going pandemic making it problematic to conduct in-person classroom visits, the annual Birmingham Water Works School Program will continue virtually.
The Birmingham Water Works PR Team has established an online hub for educational content about water, from the utility’s role in treating and delivering water to its importance in health, hygiene and the economy.
The hub will curate educational content, including a digital copy of the school program workbook, content from third-party sources, and original online and offline activities created by the team, such as puzzles, experiments and quizzes. Students will have opportunities to attend “virtual field trips” via behind-the-scenes videos of the water filtration process and the organization’s history.

“We conduct the annual school program as a public service to educate students about how water is essential to life,” says Katie Baasen, PR Specialist for Birmingham Water Works and liaison for the school program. “Instead of foregoing the program due to the pandemic, providing a virtual curriculum gives students, particularly those in remote learning, a fun way to learn about water’s role in their everyday lives.”
In addition, Birmingham Water Works is holding a multimedia creative contest. Open to fifth-grade students, participants may submit digital posters, videos, or essays to win prizes for each category. Prizes include an Apple Watch, Nintendo Switch and a gift card of the winner’s choice to the Apple App Store or Google Play.
Activities and contest rules are available at bwwb.org/community/school.
