BCT ONLINE SUMMER CAMPS FOR 2020

IMAGINE OUTSIDE THE BOX
Birmingham Children’s Theatre’s IMAGINE OUTSIDE THE BOX explores a new way to summer camp...from your home! Each week, campers learn about stories, characters, and performance through themed activities.

Before Camp: a box will be delivered to your home with everything you need for your BCT camp experience. Including: information packet, craft supplies and written versions of the lessons and activities covered each day.

Every Morning, 9:00am: Campers gather electronically with Miss Becca to wake up our imaginations. Students reflect and share on their activities from the day before, and are guided through a lesson for the upcoming day.

After the Lesson: Campers are given a “How-To” video for that day’s activity and craft, and have the rest of the day to work on it at whatever pace works best for them and the family. Miss Becca remains available by phone and email throughout the day to answer any questions students may have, or review any parts of the lesson they need to hear again.

While the lessons and activities are labeled by day, the craft supplies are not. We want to give campers a comfortable structure from which to stretch their artistic and creative freedom. Campers will be writing, drawing, coloring, cutting, and gluing during craft time and we have done our best to design crafts that require little to no adult assistance. Each week has a different theme so you can continue to make imaginative stories at home with
BCT all summer long!

MUSICAL THEATRE INTENSIVE
Each week Director of Education Jessie Kisor leads students through a series of techniques based on different Musical Theatre styles. Days are broken into two 90 minutes online sessions where, together, we will learn the history, culture and evolution of different genres. By looking at specific shows, songs, and dance routines from popular productions, campers will receive an in-depth and hands on experience in the evolution of Musical Theatre.

Mondays - Back to Basics
Morning: Focus on the fundamentals of musical theatre as students play the part of art critic. Campers will study performance clips and break down the societal influences that brought them to stage while observing singing and acting techniques that have, literally, made history.

Afternoon: It’s time to apply those observed techniques in a special session to build your repertoire. Jessie will work with each camper to choose a monologue and song to work on, and then focus on technique, presentation, and rehearsal tools to help create a dynamic and authentic performance.

Tuesdays - Let’s Move!
Morning: Time to get moving! We will wake up those muscles through dance technique and conditioning including warm-ups, stretching, and traditional technical skills that will introduce and reinforce body awareness, alignment, strength, flexibility, musicality, and dynamics.

Afternoon: Campers will study specific choreographers and their styles, and then learn a choreographed combination in that same genre.

Wednesdays - Building Character
Morning: Why do our favorite characters behave the way they do? By examining some of theatre’s most loved characters, campers will begin to understand what makes these fictional people tick, and how to bring those motivations to their own performances.

Afternoon: Outstanding musical theatre performance is about more than having a good voice and belting to the back of the auditorium. In this session we’ll focus on the tools and tricks to really immerse yourself in your character portrayal and help bring those motivations into your song.

Thursdays - Let’s Move, Again!

Fridays - It’s the Day of the Show, Y’all!
Morning: It’s the final rehearsal where students will have an opportunity to sharpen their individual pieces and fine tune before the performance.

Afternoon: Showcase Time! It’s time for our campers to revel in all that they have learned throughout this week. Each student will perform their individual pieces and reflect on the progress they have made and new knowledge and skills they have obtained.

BROADWAY MASTER CLASSES
For youth looking to expand their theatrical talents and knowledge this summer! Offered online on consecutive Saturdays in July, participants will have a chance to interact with some of their favorite stars from screen and stage.

Education has always been the forefront of BCT’s mission. The past few months have brought about the creation of new and exciting ways to bring the BCT experience directly into individual homes with short video lessons, digital classrooms, the Cardboard Puppet Theatre, and summer camps. This Master Class series is the next in a line of physically distant arts opportunities for youth across Alabama.

BCT’s Broadway Master Classes premiere Saturday, July 11th at 10am with Kate Wesler teaching Original Choreography. A native of Birmingham, Ms. Wesler has recently been seen in the Broadway National Tours of Chicago (Roxie) and Pippin (Fastrada), and can be seen in Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as a featured Copa Dancer. She has taught Master Classes across the country as a faculty member with Broadway Connections and Stage Door Workshops and is thrilled to share her excitement and knowledge of dance and theatre with the youth of Birmingham.

Other sessions offered throughout July include Aaron Gaines (Pericles, A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Mara Davi Gaines (Dames at Sea, NBC’s Smash), Whitney Keeter (The Play That Goes Wrong, Something Rotten!), and Nick Burroughs (Kinky Boots, The Tina Turner Musical).

July 11th @ 10am - Kate Wesler, Original Choreography
July18th @ 10am - Aaron Gaines, Shakespeare Workshop
July 18th @ 11:30 - Mara Davi Gaines, Audition Prep (bring prepared contrasting 16 bar cuts with accompaniment)
