Hand in Paw's mission is to improve human health and well-being through Animal-Assisted Therapy. Hand in Paw’s professionally-trained volunteer handler and animal Therapy Teams help improve people’s day to day lives in several medical centers, schools, and human service organizations throughout North Central Alabama and Tuscaloosa.
Our volunteer teams make thousands of beneficial visits through community events and participating facilities each year, helping countless children with special needs, at-risk youth, struggling students, and people with chronic and terminal illnesses. We believe people in need deserve the hope, healing and unconditional love only therapy animals and their handlers can provide.

Hand in Paw Therapy Teams provide therapeutic visits in a variety of settings including hospitals, nursing homes, universities, and early intervention organizations. Animal-Assisted Therapy and Animal Assisted Activities are two methods Hand in Paw teams utilize to enhance health and wellness and reduce stress.
Hand in Paw's School’s Best Friend program works with Special Education teachers to enhance classroom instruction for exceptional students. Teachers incorporate Therapy Teams by teaching life skills, speech therapy, social skills, and occupational therapy through the use of a special “Activity Vest” the dog wears in the classroom.
