When you’re heading to the lake with kids in tow, packing the perfect lake bag can make all the difference between a fun day and a stressful one. As a parent, your lake bag becomes your command center, so make sure it’s stocked with both the essentials and a few sanity-savers.
Start with the basics: sunscreen, hats, and UV-protective sunglasses for everyone. Choose a water-resistant sunscreen with a high SPF, and don’t forget to reapply often. Pack swim diapers if needed, and extra clothes for the ride home, because no one wants to sit in a wet car seat.
Hydration is key, so toss in refillable water bottles and easy-to-grab snacks like fruit pouches, crackers, and granola bars. A small cooler bag can help keep everything fresh.
You’ll also want towels (one per person, plus a couple of extras), wet bags or plastic bags for wet suits, and baby powder to help remove sticky sand from feet and skin. Don’t forget sand toys, a beach blanket, and a pop-up tent or umbrella for shade. (Or, if your lake spot is more rocky than sandy, bring an inner tube and splash pad for your older kids who can swim!) If you are planning on getting in a boat, be sure it has life-jackets (or bring them with you!).

Pack wipes—they’re a lake day lifesaver for sticky hands, sandy faces, and just about everything else. A small first aid kit with band-aids and antiseptic is smart to have on hand.
For entertainment, bring a few books, coloring pads, or waterproof cards, especially if your kids need a break from the sun and swimming. And of course, don’t forget your own must-haves, like your phone, headphones, and maybe even a magazine (we recommend Birmingham Parent Magazine) you might get to skim.
With a well-packed lake bag, you’ll be more than ready for sun, splashes, and special lake memories with your kids.
