The Alabama Symphony Orchestra (ASO) is hosting a free symposium and concert series called MOMENTUM, targeted toward music-oriented high schoolers and college students. The events kick off with the opening concert on February 6 at Alys Stephens Center, featuring hip-hop sensations Shaheed and DJ Supreme for a delightful combination of hip-hop and symphonic music. (Who says those can’t go together?)
Friday, February 7, teens can learn from the best at an all-day symposium at the Alys Stephens Center, located on UAB’s campus. The event is geared toward musicians, music industry enthusiasts, aspiring sound engineers, and other music-related industry professionals—really anyone who is looking to hone their craft, elevate their passion, and expand their knowledge of music.
The experience students will gain will be invaluable. Not only will they hear inspiring panel discussions and presentations from professionals like Artistic Director Dr. Brian Nabors, ASO’s Youth Orchestra Music Director Daniel Cho, and both artists Shaheed and DJ Supreme, students will also actively participate in roundtable discussions and masterclasses, being coached by ASO musicians. Other symposium speakers include Miyazawa performing artist Kim Scott, UAB staff, director and composer Dr. Henry Panion, and many more. There will also be breakout sessions for music industry professions such as sound engineering throughout the day. Furthermore, every student will gain access to an incredible network of music professionals, which will prove extremely advantageous in their future music pursuits.
Momentum will close with a night with the ASO featuring the Aeolians of Oakwood University.
