In 1911, Rev. Carl Henckell, pastor of All Saints Church of Birmingham, sought a solution to the growing need in the community for quality health care for children. The hospital, First known as Holy Innocents Hospital for Children, began under the auspices of the Episcopal Church of Alabama in a 10-room frame house with 12 beds
Today, the Children’s main campus encompasses more than 3.5 million square feet, making it one of the largest pediatric medical facilities in the United States. With the Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children as its flagship, the hospital is licensed for 332 beds and 48 NICU bassinets. Children’s offers inpatient and outpatient services at its Russell Campus with specialty care services provided at Children’s South, Children’s on 3rd and in Huntsville. Primary care is provided in more than a dozen communities across central Alabama. In total, Children’s experiences more than 16,000 inpatient visits, and over 675,000 outpatient encounters annually.
