October is domestic violence month.

College HUNKS Hauling Junk and Moves® is taking radical action this Domestic Violence Month to support and provide direct aid to survivors of domestic violence. How? Throughout the month of October, they’re offering free or heavily discounted moves to domestic violence survivors in order to help them get out of dangerous housing situations. This initiative, called “Moves That Matter,” has become an annual program after its initial beginnings during the pandemic.
According to The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS): 2010 Summary Report, “1 in 4 women (24.3%) and 1 in 7 men (13.8%) aged 18 and older in the US have been the victim of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.” To put that into perspective, an average of 24 people per minute are victims of domestic violence in the United States over the course of a year, according to the National Domestic Violence Hotline. Clearly, domestic violence is still prevalent in our world, which makes “Moves that Matter” all that more important.
Co-Founder Nick Friedman recently shared their heart behind the program: “Our work… help remove the financial barrier to transition survivors to safe locations… We stand with survivors as they take this important step to live safe and happy lives.”
If you know someone seeking to escape a domestic violence situation or are experiencing one yourself, reach out to your local shelter to request help. The College HUNKS team has partnered with many domestic violence support organizations across the US to move survivors and treats each confidential request with sensitivity. There are 4 domestic violence and abuse shelters and programs in Birmingham, AL with 3 offering a hotline and 3 offering emergency shelter. There are also 10 domestic violence and abuse shelters and programs in the nearby area. For more information, call 205-323-4277 or go to domesticshelters.org.
