In the event of a home fire, how long do you have to escape before it’s too late?
A: 8 minutes
B: 4 minutes
C: 2 minutes
If you guessed C, you’re correct — you have just 2 minutes to get out safely. But most people don’t realize a fire can engulf a home in such a flash.
That’s why the American Red Cross of Alabama and Mississippi wants to make sure everyone in our community — especially those most vulnerable — have working smoke alarms and an escape plan to help stay safe from home fires.
Volunteer: You can help by volunteering during our Sound the Alarm event on Saturday, January 20 in Tuscaloosa to install free smoke alarms and share fire safety information with residents in need. Events like these are a rewarding way to give back and directly help families.
No prior experience is needed; training will be provided before teams visit homes with members of the Red Cross. Register now at Soundthealarm.org.
Smoke Alarm Request: If you live in West Tuscaloosa and need assistance, visit soundthealarm.org/Alabama to schedule an appointment for a free smoke alarm installation on Saturday, Jan 20, 2024, between 10 am and 2 pm. During a 20-minute home visit, Red Cross volunteers will also share information on the causes of home fires, how to prevent them, what to do if a fire starts, and how to create an escape plan.
Because of generous donations, all services are free. Visit the website to also learn more about how to keep your family safe.
