Fatherhood is an incredible journey, full of joy, challenges and personal growth. Every father’s path is unique, and mine has been deeply shaped by my work in foster care. Together with my wife, Sara, I’ve experienced the rewards and challenges of fostering and adopting children. I’m excited to share my story, hoping to inspire and offer advice to other dads on their own parenting journeys.
My Journey into Fatherhood
My path to fatherhood began in an unconventional way, driven by a deep passion for helping children in need. Alongside my wife, Sara, we founded Ohana in 2015, driven by our passion for kids in the Arizona foster care system. Our mission was simple: to provide the best, family-like care for the most vulnerable youth in our state.
Over the years, Sara and I have adopted nine of our 11 children out of foster care. Each child brought unique experiences, needs, and personalities into our home, transforming our lives in countless ways. Our personal experience of adopting nine children out of the foster care system particularly fueled our passion, as we witnessed firsthand the powerful impact a loving family can have on a child.
The Foster Dad Experience
Being a foster dad has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It’s also been one of the most challenging. Each child that comes into our home brings a unique set of experiences, needs, and personalities. Our role is to provide stability, love, and support, no matter how long their stay with us might be.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned as a foster dad is the power of patience and understanding. Many foster children come from backgrounds of trauma and instability. Building trust takes time. There are moments of frustration and heartbreak, but the joy of seeing a child begin to thrive in a stable environment is immeasurable.
Advice for Other Dads
- Be Present: The most valuable thing you can give your children is your time. Be there for the big moments and the small ones. Whether it’s attending a school play or simply having dinner together, your presence is crucial.
- Practice Patience: Parenting isn’t always easy. There will be times of frustration and conflict. Remember to be patient with your children and with yourself. Growth takes time, and every step forward is progress.
- Show Unconditional Love: Children need to know they are loved unconditionally. This means showing them love and support, even when they make mistakes. Your love provides the foundation for their confidence and self-worth.
- Communicate Openly: Foster an environment where open communication is encouraged. Let your children know they can come to you with anything, without fear of judgment or punishment. This builds trust and strengthens your relationship.
- Model Resilience: Life is full of ups and downs. Show your children how to handle challenges with resilience and grace. Let them see you face difficulties and overcome them. Your actions will teach them more than words ever could.
My Personal Background
I hold a Ph.D. in Psychology and master’s degrees in Christian Leadership and Clinical Psychology. With over 15 years in key leadership roles in child welfare agencies, social services, and churches, my professional journey has always been aligned with my passion for helping children and the underserved.
As a residential faculty member at South Mountain Community College, I teach developmental psychology, statistics, and research methods. This academic role allows me to share my knowledge and passion with the next generation of social workers and psychologists.
Founding Ohana AZ
In 2015, Sara and I founded Ohana AZ, an organization providing residential and social services for foster children and adults with disabilities. Our experiences with foster care inspired us to create a supportive community where these individuals can thrive. Additionally, we established Friends of Ohana, a nonprofit offering transitional housing to girls who have been sex trafficked, mentorship to foster youth, and other supportive services.
Our work doesn’t stop with Ohana. Driven by a passion for creating jobs, especially for aged-out foster children, and fostering community, I started several businesses in the Laveen area, including Hānai Coffee and Cocktails and multiple F45 locations. These ventures provide employment opportunities and create spaces for the community to come together.
Fatherhood, in all its forms, is a journey of love, growth, and endless learning. My experience as a foster dad has enriched my life in ways I never imagined. It has taught me the importance of patience, unconditional love, and the incredible impact of providing a stable, loving home.
To all the dads out there, whether biological, adoptive, or foster, know that your role is invaluable. Embrace the journey with an open heart and a willing spirit. Your love and presence have the power to shape lives and create lasting positive change.
