This September, in recognition of Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month, the Laura Crandall Brown Foundation (LCBF) will announce its 12th annual A State of Teal Awareness Campaign and host its 15th annual Head Over Teal 5K/10K.
LCBF’s A State of Teal Awareness Campaign will begin on September 1 and continue throughout the month; its goal to highlight the importance of increasing awareness about gynecologic cancers. Awareness is spread through the use of radio advertising, digital advertising, and events including Head Over Teal and 30 For 30. Proclamations will be issued at the city, county, and state levels in an effort to raise awareness throughout Alabama.
“Coupling this campaign with Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month gives us the unique opportunity to double our efforts in the fight against gynecologic cancers,” says Meg McGlamery, LCBF Executive Director. “Spreading awareness about early detection signs and symptoms has the potential to save a life, is paramount for women of all ages, and is a large part of our vocation here at LCBF.”
The 15th annual Head Over Teal 5K/10K will return to the Town Hall in the Hoover Preserve subdivision on Saturday, September 28, 2024. Event features include: 5K race, 10K race, food, live music, family friendly games, face painting, and crazy hair. Pets are welcome and encouraged to partake. Participants have the opportunity to raise funds individually or as a team. Lead race times will be eligible for a Trak Shak gift card. Social media engagement is encouraged using the hashtag #headoverteal. LCBF social media platforms include Facebook @LCBFoundation, Instagram at lcbfoundation, Vimeo at Laura Crandall Brown Foundation, and Flickr at Laura Crandall Brown Foundation.
“Head Over Teal is instrumental in carrying out the foundation’s pursuit of early detection research funding, community empowerment through gynecologic cancer awareness, and emotional and financial support services,” says Irene Goddard, LCBF Development Director.

New this year, LCBF invites you to join the fight against gynecologic cancers and pledge to run or walk 30 miles in 30 days. The 30 For 30 campaign strives to continuously raise awareness throughout the entire month of September. With no early detection testing for four of the five GYN cancers, spreading information about GYN cancer signs and symptoms is fundamental. Invite the community along on your journey and engage social media by using the hashtags #walkingforGYN and #30for30.

About the Laura Crandall Brown Foundation:
Every six minutes, a woman is diagnosed with a gynecologic (GYN) cancer (ovarian, cervical, endometrial/uterine, vaginal, and vulvar), and every 22 minutes, a woman dies of gynecologic cancer. This year alone, more than 34,000 women will die. Alabama is tied as the number one state for cervical cancer deaths in the U.S. and ranks sixth for ovarian cancer deaths. There are no early detection tests or screenings for four out of five GYN cancers. Laura Crandall Brown Foundation focuses on early detection research, awareness education, and support services for GYN cancer patients and families. Since our founding in 2009 we have:
- Granted more than $750,000 for ovarian cancer early detection research
- Educated tens of thousands of community members on GYN cancer prevention info, signs and symptoms, and
- Provided emotional, educational, and direct financial support to thousands of GYN cancer patients, survivors, and co-survivors.
