Minuteman Disaster Response (MDR), a non-profit first responder support team comprised of well-trained volunteers, is expanding into Birmingham, Alabama and will be hosting an informational meeting for those interested in joining the organization and getting trained to serve communities in the aftermath of disasters.
The meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 16 at 6:30 pm CST. Those interested in serving communities in need and getting involved in disaster response can visit the following link to register and get more information: https://www.minutemanresponse.org/bham-interest/.
Minuteman Disaster Response is a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit based in McKinney, Texas that is driven by over 230 trained volunteers who serve communities after disasters. Volunteers are trained in search and rescue from the ground, air, and water as well as emergency communications, flooded home muck-outs, chainsaw and heavy equipment operations. To preserve critical community resources in the aftermath of natural disasters, the organization deploys as a fully self-contained and self-sufficient task force that is capable of providing for itself while meeting the needs of the communities it serves.
“For the past 10 years, our organization has been training, equipping and deploying volunteer men and women to assist with efforts before, during and after natural disasters,” says Matt Payne, Executive Director of Minuteman Disaster Response. “As part of our mission to help as many disaster survivors as possible, we’re excited to expand our footprint and establish a base of operations here in Birmingham which will better position us to serve the entire southeastern portion of the U.S. in times of disaster. We’re looking forward to recruiting and training more volunteers ready to answer the call to serve others.”
Since its founding in 2011, Minuteman Disaster Response has deployed to 26 major disasters in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Kentucky. In 2021, the organization deployed 141 volunteers, who served 7,041 hours, in support of communities impacted by natural disasters – resulting in a disaster recovery cost-savings to these areas of $198,693.
“This expansion into Alabama will help us serve more people, quicker and more effectively. We’re excited to collaborate and build partnerships with local churches, organizations and companies that are interested in supporting our mission and amplifying our impact in helping communities respond and recover from natural disasters,” says Brian Meagher, Director of Strategic Partnerships at Minuteman Disaster Response.
