On July 23, 2018, Katie Talley Dawson, suffered from a rare and unpreventable birth complication known as an Amniotic Fluid Embolism (AFE) during the birth of her daughter. Her life was unexpectedly threatened on what should have been one of the most joyous times of her young life. The doctors gave Dawson a small chance of survival, however with excellent and aggressive care she did survive. It did require numerous pints of blood.
Blood Drive Information:
Katie Dawson and her family have organized a replenishment blood drive on Saturday, July 20, 2024, from 10am-6pm at Moody High School, 714 High School Drive, Moody, AL 35004 with a goal to collect 125 of units and raise awareness for AFE.
Facts about Amniotic Fluid Embolism:
- AFE happens in approximately 1 in 40,000 births.
- AFE is a leading cause of maternal mortality and morbidity.
- AFE can happen regardless of age, race, birth order, or delivery method.
Facts about Blood Donation:
- Every two seconds someone needs blood
- 5 million people need blood transfusions each year in the U.S.
- Only 7% of those in the U.S. give blood
