The Watsons Go to Birmingham is Alabama Shakespeare Festival’s latest performance, and it tells the story of the fateful summer road trip the Watson family made from Flint, Michigan to Birmingham, Alabama. Set in the 60s, in the heat of the Civil Rights Movement, the storyline revolves around the devastating 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham. This stage adaptation of the book, written by Christopher Paul Curtis in 1963, contextualizes the events, bringing history to life in a powerful way. The show will run from February 6–23 on the octagon stage. The show is recommended for ages 10 and up. “We talk about from the first day of rehearsal finding the joy in the pain,” Director Keith Arthur Bolden says. “There’s always going to be pain in life, but we get to fight to find the joy in it.” Buy tickets on ASA’s website.
