Experience the history and beauty of Birmingham's neighborhoods
Published: March 18, 2022
Vulcan Park and Museum announces the return of its annual tour programming, the Birmingham Walking Tours. Tours began March 19, visitors and residents alike can experience the history and beauty of Birmingham’s neighborhoods and cultural districts in a fun, invigorating way.
The spring tours include Forest Park and the Historic Loft District on select Saturdays and Sundays.
Presented by The Caring Foundation of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, Spire, and Stone Building Company, the two-hour tours will kickoff on Saturday, March 19 in Forest Park led by architect, Allison Vosicky. A residential area, Forest Park was the first development of its size in the area to have sidewalks and asphalt roads. Development began in 1907, and until this time the area was only used for mining. Home to many well-known leaders and characters through the years, this tour focuses on the unique architecture of the houses while telling some of the stories of its past residents.
Continuing with the series on April 3, architect Janine Mwenja will guide attendees around the Historic Loft District. Birmingham’s Loft District represents adaptability. The area has had to pivot many times over the years yet remains one of the most historically relevant places in the whole city. Standing in one spot in this district would look similar, to someone today, as it did 100 years ago. This tour focuses on the history of the area while highlighting the beautiful architecture of the historic buildings.
From historical homes to new retail developments, VPM has offered limited walking tours over the past 16 years, unlocking and discovering the fascinating, uniqueness of the city. A brainchild of Phillip Morris, a beloved historian and author, these tours allow participants to dive into the rich history and culture discovering hidden architectural treasures in the city. Registration is $25 for Vulcan Park and Museum members and $30 for non-members. This year Vulcan Park & Museum is offering a bundled price option to tour both areas for $40 for Vulcan Park & Museum members and $50 for non-members. Tour groups will not exceed twenty participants. Reservations and payment are required in advance.
