ASFA 2020 Summer Camps – Make Summer Count

Alabama School of Fine Arts summer camps meet the needs of the young sketch artist to the young computer scientist. Programs are designed to educate, inspire and enrich the student in a fun and collaborative environment. We have camps in math, film and theatre, computer science, music, dance, art, and creative writing. Campers can build their dance technique, their confidence on the stage or even an app. Sign up today!

Kodu: Programming Video Game Design
June 1 – 5

Rising 5th – 8th graders
Tuition $195
Kodu is a visual programming language for the creation of games, digital storytelling and other fun digital creations. Kodu games run on a PC or an XBOX. At the end of camp, students will be able to share their game online and take it home. Kodu is recommended for students of all skill levels.

Android APP Programming
June 1 – 5

Tuition $195
Do you enjoy using apps on your phone and wonder how they get made? Now you can learn to program apps for Android phones and tablets with AppInventor. Learn logic and fundamental computer programming techniques while you are having fun. You don’t need to bring your own tablet, but you may if you’d like.

Beginning Creative Writing Camp

Do you love stories--writing them, watching them, dreaming them up? Have you written poems you’ve never shown anyone? Does the thought of reading a new book excite you more than just about anything else? Then this half-day camp is for you! Pick either the morning or the afternoon session; this camp is perfect for mixing and matching with ASFA’s other half-day camps this week. ASFA’s award-winning creative writing faculty will introduce rising 6 th – 8 th grade students to the fundamentals of creative writing (poetry and prose), offer generative prompts and provide constructive feedback. Tuition includes a writing journal and an anthology of work created during the week.

Intermediate Creative Writing Camp

While it’s open to anyone who is truly passionate about reading and writing, this camp is specially designed for students who have completed the Beginning Creative Writing Camp in a previous summer and/or are considering applying for admission into ASFA’s Creative Writing Department during the regular school year. It’s also a good opportunity for students who have been admitted to the ASFA-CW program to get prepared for the coming school year. After a quick review of fundamentals, ASFA’s creative writing faculty will help campers to dive deep into the craft of writing while offering generative prompts and providing constructive feedback. Tuition includes a writing journal and an anthology of work created during the week.

It’s a Movie! It's a Play! It’s Acting Camp!

Explore the skills it takes to make film and theatre at ASFA’s Theatre Arts Intensive. Under the guidance of ASFA faculty, film and theatre professionals, students will explore the worlds of on-camera scene work, stage acting, dance and improvisation. Learn from professional award-winning artists, including L.A. improviser and Second City (Chicago) alum Mark Swaner. Discover the secrets of acting on camera from two working Screen Actors Guild television actors—New York Film Academy teacher Paul Tei (credits include recurring characters on TV's Burn Notice & Bloodline) and John Manzelli, Chair of ASFA Theatre Arts program. This is a non-stop week of master classes, tips, training, laughs and guidance from actors with hundreds of hours of on-set and on-stage experience.

Pre-Algebra (non-credit course, preparation for Algebra 1)

Tuition $525 (incoming ASFA M/S students $265)
This class will cover all the skills necessary to complete intense Algebra 1 class requirements. It is open to all rising 7th – 9th grade students who want to prepare for Algebra 1 for the coming school year. This class requires intense effort, daily attendance and commitment.

Fundamentals of Algebra 1 (eligible as a credit course)
June 1 – 19
8:00 am – 1:00 pm
Rising 7th graders and above
Tuition $525 (incoming ASFA M/S students $265)
This class covers the major topics of a first semester Algebra 1 class. It may be taken as a review of Algebra 1 or for 0.5 high school credit. Computer and graphing calculator activities and labs will be included in the curriculum. Student attendance is a must. If more than one day of class is missed, course credit cannot be awarded. The class is offered to rising 7th graders and above who have completed Pre-Algebra.

Young Dancer Intensive

The Young Dancer Intensive offers an excellent opportunity for younger students to experience a sample of ASFA dance training under the instruction of professional dance faculty. The curriculum is designed to provide strong training in ballet technique in an inspiring and nurturing environment. This is a wonderful opportunity for dancers to experience more in-depth training. A performance will be held on the final day.

Music Mania!
June 8 – 12

Rising 5th – 9th graders
Tuition $195
Whether you like to sing, play an instrument, or write your own music, you will have fun exploring music basics like ear-training, music theory and music history. There will be guest artists and song-writing workshops as campers study the science of music. The camp is for students who want to learn more about the fundamentals of music, want to be better at playing their instrument, and who want to learn how technology is used in music. There will be daily classes in Music Technology, Choir, Instrumental Ensemble and Chamber Music. The camp concludes with a performance for family and friends.

Stencyl: Programming Video Game Design
June 15 – 19
8:00 am – 12:00 pm
Rising 5th – 8th graders
Tuition $195
Stencyl is an advanced visual programming platform that builds on user’s prior knowledge of video games to create a fully interactive world with an exciting variety of customizations. Stencyl games can be published on iOS, Android, Windows and Mac. At the end of the week, students will be able to publish their game. This camp is recommended for students who have had previous experience with a design software (like Kodu).

Exploring Drawing and Printmaking
June 15 – 19
12:30 pm – 4:30 pm
Rising 5th – 8th graders
Tuition $230
This is a fun-filled week to try your hand (and eye!) at both drawing and printmaking. You’ll experiment with a variety of arts materials and techniques while building skills for later art study, including figure drawing, perspective and printmaking. Campers will also be taking trips to the Birmingham Museum of Art, which is right down the street from ASFA. Tuition includes a portfolio and art supplies.
